The inclusion of Bayern Munich fullback Alphonso Davies in Canada's World Cup squad on Sunday allayed any doubts regarding the fullback's preparation for the competition in Qatar.
Alphonso Davies, who plays as a forward for the Canadian national team, has missed the last two Bundesliga matches for the Bundesliga giants, after sustaining a hamstring injury earlier this month. A muscle fiber in the 22-year-old's right posterior thigh was torn.
Davies, who has now played 34 matches for Canada, netting 12 goals, is the most popular Canadian player. They will participate in the finals for the first time in 36 years as they were the first CONCACAF nation to qualify for this year's World Cup.
In the weeks leading to Qatar, Canada has been plagued by injuries, including the loss of goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau and defender Scott Kennedy, who both sustained fractured legs in the MLS Cup final.
However, there are now fewer worries that Canada's most dynamic player, Davies, may miss the World Cup due to injury.
Davies who was included in the FIFA Best World XI back in 2020, is the first player from North America to be selected in the FIFPRO WORLD XI; as a result, Canadian head coach John Herdman cannot afford to leave him out of the squad despite injury concerns.
Meanwhile, Doneil Henry's name was on John Herdman's 26-man list but the Canada coach was forced to make the painful choice to exclude Henry after the seasoned defender sustained an injury during the warm-up for last Friday's friendly against Bahrain.
In a conference call from Doha, Herdman stated, "The medical team assessed him and it wasn't great news, to be fair; the timeframe of his return was going to take anything up to 14 days."
"Doneil prioritized the team; we could have attempted to get him back on the field later in the competition, but he recognized it was the right call.
"When a man gives up his shirt, it really demonstrates his courage and the essence of this brotherhood is about the moment a man can take off his shirt and move forward to support the team in a new capacity”.
Cyle Larin, who is the leading scorer with 13 goals in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers— Four more than Jonathan David, his teammate, who was also selected—will also be a key player for Canada.
Canada is in Group F, along with Belgium, Morocco, and Croatia. The John Herdman-led team will begin its assault on the Belgians on November 23.
