After the USA held on for a 1-0 victory over Iran to remain in the World Cup, Gregg Berhalter gave respect to his team and made a joke of the excruciating nine minutes of added time.
The USA will play the Netherlands on Saturday in Qatar thanks to a goal from Christian Pulisic in the first half, which was the deciding factor in the game.
However, there were nine extra minutes at the end of the second period as Iran attempted to score an equalizer that would have taken them through and eliminated the United States.
'I have less hair on my head now!' Berhalter joked. “With this new injury time, I was counting every second. It's stressful. But we'll take it and battle the Netherlands”.
"I'm pleased. Proud. I believe that in the first half, we showed our soccer prowess. We had a strong first half of play. In the second half, we showed our tenacity. We're unbeaten moving into the next round because the boys worked hard”.
After receiving treatment, Pulisic played the remainder of the first half before being replaced at halfway. Pulisic was injured when he scored his goal in the 38th minute.
Regarding his top player, Berhalter stated, "No update on the status." However, I have always maintained that it is excellent when one of your finest players is also one of the hardest workers. I have so many wonderful things to say about Christian”.
McKennie told FOX Sports after the game, "We have our own swagger, we have our own style."
Weston McKennie praised the team's mindset and camaraderie after the USA's exciting 1-0 victory over Iran.
The three points guarantee Gregg Berhalter's team a spot in the Round of 16, where they will play the Netherlands on Saturday morning.
McKennie stated, "At the end, a heart-dropping, sinking moment, but we got it done and we're delighted to still be here."
In the days leading up to Saturday, Berhalter's primary concern will probably be Pulisic's health.
After sprinting to finish Sergino Dest's headed pass across the Iran six-yard box, the 24-year-old Chelsea forward got injured.
He struck the ball, clashed with Iran's Beiranvand, the goalkeeper, and was knocked out for a while. He was unable to celebrate his first-ever World Cup goal and was eventually assisted off the pitch by two USMNT medical personnel.
He came back for the final five seconds of the first half but missed the second. He was replaced by Brendan Aaronson as he visited a local nearby hospital.
